Introduction

To maintain competency and ensure continued compliance with international maritime safety standards, seafarers are required to periodically refresh their knowledge and practical skills. The STCW Refresh Training, aligned with the STCW Convention (Manila Amendments), ensures that seafarers retain proficiency in essential safety areas such as survival, firefighting, first aid, and safety responsibilities.

This program, developed by Global Horizon Training Center, is designed to update and reinforce participants’ knowledge and hands-on skills in core STCW safety competencies. It focuses on practical exercises, emergency response readiness, and adherence to the latest maritime safety procedures.

Participants will renew their confidence and ability to respond effectively to onboard emergencies, ensuring continued compliance and operational safety.

 

Course Objectives

By the end of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Refresh knowledge of STCW basic safety requirements

Day 1: STCW Overview and Personal Safety Refresher (PSSR)

  • Overview of STCW requirements and refresher obligations
  • Personal safety responsibilities onboard
  • Safe working practices and hazard awareness
  • Emergency procedures and safety culture
  • Refresher exercises on PSSR concepts

Day 2: Personal Survival Techniques Refresher (PST)

  • Survival principles at sea
  • Use of life-saving appliances (lifejackets, immersion suits)
  • Abandon ship procedures
  • Survival techniques in water
  • Practical survival drills

Day 3: Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting Refresher (FP&FF)

  • Fire hazards and prevention methods
  • Types of fires and firefighting techniques
  • Use of firefighting equipment
  • Breathing apparatus and PPE
  • Practical firefighting drills

Day 4: Elementary First Aid Refresher (EFA)

  • Basic life support (CPR)
  • Casualty assessment and treatment
  • Managing injuries and medical emergencies
  • Use of first aid equipment
  • Practical first aid scenarios

Day 5: Integrated Emergency Response and Assessment

  • Combined emergency scenarios (fire, abandonment, medical)
  • Team coordination and communication
  • Emergency drills and simulations
  • Review of best practices
  • Final assessment and certification review
