Introduction

Maritime security is a critical aspect of modern shipping operations, requiring all seafarers to maintain a high level of awareness regarding potential security threats. The STCW Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA) course is a mandatory requirement under the STCW Convention (Regulation VI/6-1) for all seafarers without designated security duties.

This program, developed by Global Horizon Training Center, provides participants with the essential knowledge to recognize, respond to, and report security threats in accordance with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code. It focuses on building awareness of maritime security risks such as piracy, terrorism, and unauthorized access.

Participants will gain the necessary competencies to contribute to the overall security of the vessel while complying with international maritime regulations and best practices.

 

Course Objectives

By the end of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Understand maritime security concepts and threats
  • Recognize different types of security risks (piracy, terrorism, smuggling)
  • Understand the requirements of STCW VI/6-1 and the ISPS Code
  • Identify suspicious activities and security vulnerabilities
  • Follow ship security procedures and protocols
  • Communicate and report security incidents effectively
  • Contribute to maintaining a secure ship environment

Day 1: Introduction to Maritime Security Awareness

  • Importance of security awareness onboard ships
  • Types of maritime security threats
  • Roles and responsibilities of all crew members
  • Introduction to STCW VI/6-1 requirements

Day 2: ISPS Code and Security Framework

  • Structure and objectives of the ISPS Code
  • Ship Security Plan (SSP) overview
  • Security levels (Level 1, 2, 3)
  • Roles of SSO, CSO, and PFSO
  • Basic security procedures onboard

Day 3: Identifying Security Threats and Risks

  • Recognizing suspicious behavior and activities
  • Common security threats (piracy, stowaways, smuggling)
  • Security risk awareness and prevention
  • Access control basics
  • Reporting suspicious incidents

Day 4: Security Procedures and Emergency Response

  • Security communication and reporting protocols
  • Responding to security threats and incidents
  • Emergency procedures and coordination
  • Maintaining vigilance during operations
  • Case studies on maritime security incidents

Day 5: Security Awareness in Practice

  • Security drills and awareness exercises
  • Personal responsibility in maintaining security
