Introduction

Maritime security is a critical component of safe shipping operations, safeguarding vessels, crew, cargo, and port facilities. With threats such as piracy, smuggling, and unauthorized access increasing, seafarers must be trained to maintain a high level of security awareness onboard. This course follows STCW Regulation VI/6-1 and the ISPS Code, equipping all seafarers without designated security duties with essential knowledge to recognize risks, follow procedures, and respond appropriately to security incidents.

 

Course Objectives

By the end of the 5-day program, participants will be able to:

  • Understand maritime security concepts and frameworks.
  • Identify and assess potential threats both at sea and in port.
  • Recognize suspicious behavior and security risks.
  • Apply basic shipboard security procedures effectively.
  • Report and respond to security incidents in compliance with international standards.

Course Outline – 5 Days

Day 1 – Introduction to Maritime Security & Threats

  • Definition and importance of maritime security.
  • Overview of global maritime threats and risk environments.
  • Introduction to piracy, smuggling, stowaways, and unauthorized vessel access.
  • Identifying suspicious activities onboard.
  • Initial exercises in situational awareness.

Day 2 – The ISPS Code and Security Levels

  • Purpose and principles of the ISPS Code.
  • Shipboard security organization and roles of crew.
  • Overview of security levels (1, 2, 3) and associated measures.
  • Security responsibilities for seafarers without designated duties.
  • Group discussion and practical scenarios.

Day 3 – Threat Detection & Risk Recognition

  • Recognizing potential threats and vulnerabilities.
  • Indicators of piracy, stowaways, and smuggling.
  • Monitoring access points and identifying unauthorized personnel.
  • Practical exercises on threat assessment and reporting.

Day 4 – Shipboard Security Procedures

  • General shipboard security routines and checks.
  • Personal security responsibilities and situational awareness.
  • Emergency response procedures for security incidents.
  • Communication protocols for reporting threats.
  • Case studies on past maritime security incidents.

Day 5 – Reporting, Response & Assessment

  • Reporting security incidents according to the ISPS Code.
  • Conducting security drills and evaluating responses.
  • Integrating lessons learned into personal and team practices.
  • Final review of key concepts.
  • Assessment: scenario-based exercises and short test.
