Introduction

This course is designed for individuals involved in or supervising scaffolding, rigging, and lifting tasks in the construction and industrial sectors. It covers various types of scaffolding (tube & fitting, mobile, system), rigging and lifting practices, selection and inspection of lifting tackle, proper load connection, and safe load movement techniques. Participants will learn the importance of compliance with safety standards and regulations, along with the best practices to ensure safety and avoid accidents or incidents during scaffolding, rigging, and lifting operations.

 

Objectives

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the legal requirements surrounding scaffolding, rigging, and lifting.
  • Identify and use scaffold fittings and lifting tackle correctly.
  • Become familiar with scaffolding, rigging, and lifting terminology.
  • Inspect scaffolding and lifting tackle to ensure they are safe to use.
  • Record inspection results and utilize the Scafftag system.
  • Recognize the common causes of scaffolding collapses and how to prevent them.
  • Apply basic safety requirements for scaffolding, rigging, and lifting operations.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Scaffolding, Rigging & Lifting

  • Introduction to the course
    • Overview of scaffolding, rigging, and lifting tasks and their importance in construction and industrial sites.
  • Legal Requirements
    • Key regulations and standards that govern scaffolding, rigging, and lifting operations (e.g., OSHA, BS EN standards).
  • Scaffold Fittings Identification & Use
    • Different types of scaffold fittings and their applications.
    • Importance of using the correct fittings for various scaffolding types.
  • Lifting Tackle Identification & Use
    • Common lifting tackle types (e.g., slings, shackles, hooks) and their correct usage.
  • Scaffolding Terminology
    • Key terms related to scaffolding (e.g., bays, standards, ledgers, transoms).
  • Rigging & Lifting Terminology
    • Key terms related to rigging and lifting (e.g., load weight, lifting points, crane hooks).
  • Inspection of Scaffolding
    • How to inspect scaffolding for safety, stability, and compliance.
  • Inspection of Lifting Equipment
    • How to inspect lifting tackle for damage or wear.

Day 2: Types of Scaffolding

    • Overview of the various scaffolding systems commonly used in construction.
    • Types of scaffolding covered:
      • Tube & Fitting Scaffolding: Basics of installation and application.

      • Cuplok Scaffolding: A modular system for quick assembly and disassembly.
      • Frame Scaffolding: Common in residential and industrial settings.
  • Video Presentation

Day 3: Scaffold Inspection and Mobile Scaffolding

  • Review of Day 2

  • Inspection of Scaffolding
    • Detailed process of scaffold inspection including checking for structural integrity and compliance with safety standards.
  • Mobile Scaffolding
    • Overview of mobile scaffold systems and their specific safety concerns.
    • Ensuring mobility without compromising safety.
  • The Working Platform and Structure
    • How to ensure that scaffolding platforms are stable, safe, and capable of supporting required loads.
  • Recording of Scaffolding Inspections
    • Documentation of inspection results and how to ensure compliance.
  • Scafftag System and Its Use

Day 4: Working Safely on Scaffolding

    • The latest changes to SG4:05 regulations and their impact on scaffolding work.
  • Inspection of Harnesses
    • How to inspect harnesses and fall protection equipment for safety.
  • Selecting & Inspecting the Correct Lifting Tackle
    • Best practices for selecting and inspecting lifting tackle to ensure safety.

Day 5: Rigging & Lifting

  • Review of Day 4
    • A recap of the previous day’s material.
  • Attaching the Load to the Lifting Appliance Correctly
    • Techniques for securely attaching loads to cranes and other lifting appliances.
  • Estimating the Weight of the Load to Be Lifted
    • How to calculate or estimate load weight to avoid overloading lifting equipment.
  • Correct Signs & Signals to Direct Crane Operations
    • Standard hand signals and communication methods used in rigging and lifting operations.
  • Correct Procedure for Lifting, Moving & Lowering Loads Safely
    • Step-by-step procedures for safely lifting, moving, and lowering loads.
  • Video Presentation
    • Visual demonstration of proper rigging, lifting, and load handling techniques.
  • Questionnaire
    • A final assessment to test knowledge and understanding of the course material.
