Introduction

Photography is a powerful communication tool for NGOs, enabling them to document activities, tell impactful stories, raise awareness, and engage donors and communities. High-quality visual content enhances transparency, supports advocacy efforts, and strengthens the overall visibility of organizational work.

This training program is designed by Global Horizon Training Center to equip participants with essential photography skills tailored for NGO environments. The program focuses on both technical and storytelling aspects of photography, helping participants capture meaningful images that reflect real-life impact, human stories, and field activities in a professional and ethical manner.

Objectives

By the end of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the fundamentals of photography and camera settings

  • Capture high-quality images in various field conditions

  • Apply composition and lighting techniques effectively

  • Tell compelling visual stories aligned with NGO missions

  • Edit and enhance photos using basic editing tools

  • Apply ethical standards in humanitarian and field photography

  • Produce visual content suitable for reports, social media, and campaigns

Outlines

Day 1: Fundamentals of Photography

  • Introduction to photography and its role in NGOs

  • Types of cameras (DSLR, mirrorless, smartphone photography)

  • Understanding camera settings: ISO, shutter speed, aperture

  • Exposure triangle and image clarity

  • Basic camera handling and shooting modes

  • Practical exercise: capturing images with different settings

Day 2: Composition and Lighting Techniques

  • Principles of composition (rule of thirds, framing, leading lines)

  • Working with natural and artificial light

  • Shooting in different environments (indoor, outdoor, low light)

  • Capturing people, activities, and environments

  • Avoiding common photography mistakes

  • Field exercise: capturing well-composed images

Day 3: Storytelling Through Photography

  • Visual storytelling for NGOs and humanitarian work

  • Capturing emotions and human-centered stories

  • Photo documentation for reports and case studies

  • Creating photo narratives (beginning, middle, end)

  • Ethical considerations in photography (consent, dignity, privacy)

  • Workshop: developing a photo story concept

Day 4: Photo Editing and Content Preparation

  • Introduction to photo editing tools (mobile and desktop)

  • Basic editing techniques (cropping, brightness, contrast, color correction)

  • Enhancing images for professional use

  • Preparing images for social media and reports

  • File formats, resolution, and storage best practices

  • Hands-on practice: editing selected photos

Day 5: Practical Application and Final Project

  • Planning a photography assignment for NGO activities

  • Field exercise: capturing a complete photo story

  • Selecting and sequencing images for storytelling

  • Presenting photo stories for campaigns or reports

  • Participant presentations and feedback session

  • Course review and next steps for skill development
