Introduction

The Network Cable Installer Fiber Optic Cabling program provides a balanced mix of technical knowledge and hands-on practice for copper and fiber optic network installations. Participants gain the skills required to complete network infrastructure projects to the highest standards while adhering to current national and international regulations and industry best practices. The program gives access to the latest industry standards, ensuring participants become competent and confident network installers.

 

Course Objectives

By the end of the program, participants will:

  • Acquire expert-level knowledge to confidently install, test, and certify copper and fiber optic cable installations.
  • Understand and apply national and international industry standards in network cabling.
  • Execute installations efficiently, safely, and in compliance with best practices.

Course Outlines

Day 1: Safety & Network Fundamentals

  • General and fiber safety
  • LED, VCSEL, and laser safety
  • Fibre preparation hazards and disposal
  • Hazardous substances handling
  • Outside plant (OSP) safety: pits, gas detection
  • Network overview, topologies, hardware, and benefits

Day 2: Theory of Light & Cable Infrastructure

  • Optical windows, electromagnetic spectrum, transmission
  • Cable types and construction
  • Installation practices, patchcords, enclosures, and ODF
  • Slack fiber management and protection

Day 3: Standards & Connectors

  • Standards bodies: ISO, CENELEC, TIA/EIA
  • Cable classifications and application distances
  • Connector types, functionality, and density
  • Fibre backbone in LAN, media selection

Day 4: Fiber Splicing & Termination

  • Fusion splicer setup and operation
  • Singlemode and multimode programs
  • Splicing in patch panels
  • Pigtail manufacture, cold cure, mechanical, and fusion splicing
  • End-face inspection techniques

Day 5: Testing & Certification

  • Fluke CCTT (Fibre)
  • Tier 1 certification: CertiFiber® Pro
  • Tier 2 certification: OptiFiber® Pro
  • Encircled Flux (EF) standards
  • OTDR event types and link testing with OptiFiber® Pro
