Introduction

Climate change poses one of the greatest challenges of our time, with significant implications for the environment, society, and the global economy. In response to this challenge, organizations worldwide are increasingly recognizing the need to take action to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and adapt to the changing climate. This comprehensive 5-day training program aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand climate change, effectively manage GHG emissions, and implement climate-related strategies within their organizations.

  • Recognize decarbonization opportunities across different scopes of emissions and develop strategies to reduce carbon footprints.

  • Apply the GHG Protocol standards to measure, manage, and report emissions throughout the corporate value chain.

  • Implement corporate accounting and reporting standards for GHG emissions and ensure inventory quality management.

  • Gain practical experience through GHG Protocol exercises, including emission calculations and reporting.

  • Evaluate GHG Protocol exercises and apply learnings to improve emissions management practices within their organizations.

Outlines

Day 1:

Understanding Climate Change and Greenhouse Gases

  • Climate Change, Greenhouse Gases, governmental response, and IPCC AR6 Representative Concentration Pathways.

  • Introduction to the science of climate change, major greenhouse gases, and their sources.

  • Overview of international efforts to combat climate change, including governmental responses and IPCC reports.

Day 2:

Climate-related Reporting and Disclosure

  • Climate-related Reporting, Disclosure, (CFD, IFRS (ISSB) S1, S2, EU CSRD, ESRS and SFDR).

  • Understanding various reporting frameworks and standards related to climate change and sustainability.

  • Practical guidance on disclosing climate-related risks and opportunities in financial reporting.

Day 3:

Investor, Banking, and Corporate Initiatives

  • Investor, banking, and corporate initiatives and action (Practical corporate actions and Offsetting).

  • Exploring investor expectations and corporate initiatives for addressing climate change.

  • Overview of carbon offsetting mechanisms and their role in corporate sustainability strategies.

Day 4:

Sustainable Procurement

  • Sustainable Procurement (Green Public Procurement (GPP) and Other major GPP policies and legislation).

  • Understanding the concept of sustainable procurement and its importance in mitigating climate change.

  • Overview of Green Public Procurement policies and legislation, and their implementation in corporate procurement practices.

Day 5:

GHG Reporting and Decarbonization Strategies

  • Introduction to GHG Reporting.

  • Overview of greenhouse gas emissions reporting requirements and methodologies.

  • Decarbonization Opportunities (Scope 1, 2, and 3, and US EPA guidance for Scope 1 vehicle emissions).

  • Identifying decarbonization opportunities across different scopes of emissions and understanding regulatory guidance for vehicle emissions.

  • Introduction to the GHG Protocol Standards and Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard.

  • Overview of the GHG Protocol standards, with a focus on the Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard.

  • Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standards, and Managing Inventory Quality.

  • Understanding corporate accounting and reporting standards for greenhouse gas emissions and best practices for managing inventory quality.

  • GHG Protocol Exercise.

  • Practical exercise applying GHG Protocol methodologies to calculate and report emissions.

  • GHG Protocol Exercise Evaluation.

  • Review and evaluation of the GHG Protocol exercise, feedback, and discussion on lessons learned.
